Indira Madgula
Mrs Madgula is a consultant ophthamologist at Royal Bolton Hospital. She was the Glaucoma Lead at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust till 2025. She was instrumental in developing and pioneering a shared care glaucoma model, which significantly improved service delivery and earned her national recognition as a finalist at the 2022 Hospital Services Journal (HSJ) Awards.
She is an Educator and Glaucoma consultant in North west England for Spamedica and also a member of their Glaucoma advisory panel where she provides input regarding service development and delivery. She works for other ISTCs ( Newmedica and Community Health and eye Care ) delivering glaucoma care. Mrs Madgula’s clinical expertise lies in managing complex adult glaucoma and cataract surgery.
Mrs Madgula is known for her contributions to medical education and training. She is an Educational supervisor at Royal Bolton hospitals and is involved in teaching and training of TSC trainees and SAS doctors. She worked as a Deputy Clinical Placement Supervisor for year 4 medical students and was appointed as Honorary Senior Lecturer, University of Manchester. She is currently an Academic Advisor for medical students from Manchester Medical School. She is also known for her extensive experience in teaching and mentoring specialist optometrists and junior surgeons. She was awarded Honorary Senior Lecturer, Edge Hill University for training international fellows for their Mch degree from the university. She was the first ophthalmology trainee in the UK to be appointed as an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth), London. She served as a PLAB examiner for the General Medical Council (GMC) and currently examines internationally for the Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow, and nationally for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London.
Her commitment to global eye health was recognised with the Dorey Lister Award from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2015 for her charitable work in India. She continues to contribute to the field through presentations at national and international conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals. She has authored the glaucoma chapter in the book “FRCOphth and FRCS Part-2 Exam Companion: MCQs with OSCE and Viva Focus” published by Springer. She is a member of the Surgical Skills course Faculty of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist.
